Mangrove Snapper

Description

 

Mangrove snapper are dark brown or grey with reddish or orange spots in rows along their sides and a dark band from the snout through the eye on young fish. Needle sharp canine teeth at the front of the upper jaw and the dorsal fins have dark or reddish boarders with no dark spot on their sides underneath the dorsal.

Where Mangrove Snapper are Found

Juvenile mangrove snapper are found around inshore tidal creeks, mangrove covered shore lines and grass beds. While adults can be found on nearshore or offshore reefs and rock piles.

Remarks

These snapper spawn from June through August and feed on crustaceans such as shrimp and small crabs and small fish like pilchards and pinfish.

Capt. Bear's Comments

This is a fish that is always abundant in our region. They sometimes are hard to set a hook and they will test the patience of even the most skilled angler. You can target them inshore or offshore. They are great for the kids because there are many of them around it just flat out keeps them occupied.
