This
species of grouper have a brownish grey color with dark worm like markings on
its sides. Gag or Grey grouper are often confused with their larger cousin the
Black grouper which can be found in more tropical waters.
Where Gag Grouper are Found
Adults are found offshore over rocks and reefs. Juveniles can be found in the
cracks and sand holes that litter the flats of the Nature Coast.
Florida Record
Remarks
Gag grouper spawn offshore in water no shallower than 120 feet in the Middle
Grounds area of the Gulf of Mexico January through March. Young gags are predominantly
female transforming to males as they grow larger. They will feed on smaller fish
and squid but will commonly attack trolled plugs.
Capt. Bear's Comments
Gags can be caught year round. I prefer to target them in the winter months
because they seem to be closer inshore although they can be caught all year long.
Sometimes, you have to be willing to go out and get them in deeper water.
