taking advantage of the snapper spawn

Report Date: July 8, 2007

Well getting up early in crystal river is still the way to catch fish. What ever it is your after you will catch it early. The bite has been slowing to an almost stop after about noon. Today Capt Waid and I went to do some exploring a few miles of shore and, to check some spots that I thought should be holding some fish. Well I was wright the snapper were every where they're not huge but, they never are untill you get to about 30'or deeper. It only took about 45 min. for the two of us to have our limit of mangos. These fish where about 7 miles of shore on a pile of rocks that lay in about 10' of water. A little bit of chum and some shrimp with a small split shot will get you where you need to be. You should use small circle hooks because your going to get a lot of bites and, you will be putting alot of fish back. The average fish is around 11" but there are some that will give you a run for your money and, will test you average trout gear. This is a great way to spend the day with a boat load of youngsters.
THE red fish are still hidding in the grass due to the high tides, wait un till the lowest tide you have for tht morning and try them then. Outher wise you will be spending alot of time looking for fish that you can't find.
Speackeled trout are still in the deeper water. The best way to get these guys is to use just a jig and, what ever you like to use on it. Work the bait slow enough to get ther attintion yet fast enough to send out its natural vibe through the water. The water is dirty so something that has a little shake will help the fish find your bait.
The cobia are still around. I cant remember the young mans name but who eaver he was caught a good one this past sater day when asked where he found the brute he said "IN ONE OF MY COBIA SPOTS" smart kid the fish was 47.5 " and estemated weight was 27.5 lbs. You can check out a pictur of this fish in my photo gallery.
Remember that there is plenty of fish out there for a reason. So don't get gready take only what you want to eat and leave the rest for someone else to have a good time.
